David Hoyle, the insurance manager at Age Concern, says: "On certain types of insurance older people are perceived as better risks. People tend to pay lower premiums for household insurance after they retire because they are home more often and are thought to be more honest and careful and not likely to claim for every breakage. This discount tends to remain for the rest of their lives.
"But for motor insurance it's a different story."
He says drivers aged 50 to 55 are typically offered the lowest rates. This is because insurers know they are likely to be experienced drivers and are generally more cautious on the roads than their younger counterparts.
But this agerelated discount disappears once drivers approach 70. By the time people get to this age, the number of claims they make on a motor policy rises, even though the value of those claims may be lower than average.
