Toronto fashion duo DSquared light up Milan catwalk show with cigarettes
Designers Dean and Dan Caten better known as DSquared clearly weren't taking part in promoting the Canadian Cancer Society's upcoming campaign to quit smoking for the month of March while they were in Milan for their 1960s' prom nightinspired women's Fall/Winter 2012 runway collection on Monday.
Some of the models walked the runway with custommade, bejeweled cigarette holders with the cigarettes lit.
"If you're doing a fashion show where the objective is . . .
McNeely admitted her site does have pictures of people smoking in street photography, but said she would never condone a planned editorial post featuring smoking or cigarettes.
"You have to take into account what the responsibility of your actions are," she said. "There should be nobody glamorizing smoking."
In truth, the fashion world, in North America at least, has moved away from aligning itself with the hardtokick habit, as has much of pop culture. Center for Disease Control, even though period era movies and TV shows like HBO's Mad Men still feature it heavily.
The Matine Fashion Foundation, under Imperial Tobacco, was a major sponsor in the North American fashion world, including Toronto Fashion Week, hollister france, until the rules for advertising were restricted by harsher implementation of Canada's Tobacco Act in 2003, according to Physicians for a SmokeFree Canada.
As for DSquared's show, Toronto fashion designer David Dixon said what appears to be a catwalk gimmick was totally unnecessary.
"It is a distraction to the show, to the presentation of the collection," Dixon said. "That would be a problem for me as a designer that people are paying more attention to the props then they are to the collection."
And while backstage culture may have at one time supported the habit, Dixon said the next generation of models like their nonmodel counterparts are turning away from cigarettes with the prevalence of antismoking campaigns.
"Even backstage now, there are very few girls who smoke," Dixon said.
That doesn't stop the Catens. In a backstage video, the pair can be seen smoking, drinking and joking with the girls as they get them ready.
DSquared's show is certainly not the first time models have walked the catwalk with cigarettes.
Kate Moss controversially did it when she walked for Louis Vuitton at Paris Fashion Week last year.
And it's not the first time the twin brothers have used gimmicks in their shows. Last year, their models walked a muddy catwalk with another vice bottles of Heineken.
